Detailed explanation of Yin-Yang board in PCB panelization

2024-07-23

Yin-Yang board is also called mandarin duck board. PCB panelization refers to connecting multiple PCB boards together to form a whole. Yin-Yang board is a way of panelization. Generally, there are two types of Yin-Yang board. The first type is the Yin-Yang board with reversed front and back sides, that is, the front and back panels are presented on the same side of the panel.

Another type is a Yin-Yang board where all the panels are on the same side but reversed left and right, such as the pdpd layout. As shown in the figure, pdpd layout is just a format, it can be abab layout, all of which are this layout, pdpd is not a professional term.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Yin-Yang board splicing?

Advantages:

1. It can make full use of the advantages of SMT long lines to achieve greater component efficiency. If the Yin-Yang board is used, the line change only needs to be changed once. If the Yin-Yang board is not used, the line change needs to be changed twice;

2. With the appearance of Yin-Yang board with reversed front and back sides, different parts can appear on the same side of the board at the same time to achieve greater component efficiency

3. Improve the efficiency of the production line

4. It can save the space wasted by empty boards, improve the efficiency of the board, and reduce costs

5. Keep the residual copper rate balanced

Disadvantages:

1. Large/heavy parts are not suitable

If there are some large or heavy parts on the board, it is not suitable to use Yin-Yang board. If there are large or heavy parts on both sides of the circuit board, they may fall off during the reflow oven.

2. Temperature-sensitive components are not suitable

Components are more sensitive to this temperature. We may put them on the second side for production instead of the first side. If it is made into a Yin-Yang board, both sides will be heated, so it is not good.

3. Parts that penetrate the board are not suitable

Some circuit boards have parts that penetrate the board or parts with pins, which are not conducive to printing and are not suitable.

In summary, the use of Yin-Yang boards can improve efficiency, reduce line change time, and speed up the efficiency of finished products. When considering whether to use Yin-Yang boards as a panel, we need to consider these components, whether there are large parts, whether there are parts that penetrate the board, and whether there are temperature-sensitive components. The above three conditions limit whether we can make Yin-Yang boards.
